Europe 2022- Viking Gymir Day 2 May 17

Food choices on this ship are unbelievable. You can order off the menu at each meal or they have a buffet also.  The breakfast buffet was wonderful, with many choices. On our second day on board we stopped in Breisach, Germany and got on a bus to the Black Forest.  This was an included tour. The Romans gave the Black Forest its name (dark, scary forest). It's the fruit basket of Germany- fertile soil grows grapes, strawberries, corn (for ethanol and French beer).  Plastic covers the asparagus so it stays white and is less bitter. It was in season and could be found on all the restaurant menus.  We stopped at a small group of shops in a picturesque area where we took a hike up the gorge for 30 minutes and enjoyed the mountain stream and scenery.

Very old aqueduct through the valley

We went back to the ship for lunch, which was curried chicken, jasmine rice, and fruit. Just right.  All of us except Kathy walked into Breisach up a big hill to St. Stephan Cathedral, built in the 1200-1500's, and rebuilt after WWII.  Very ornate carved altars inside.

View from the Cathedral

Do we really want to walk all the way up?

We shopped a little in town, had a beer in outside cafe, and went back to ship at 3:30. We went to the lounge before dinner to hear the port talk by Program Director George. We ate dinner up front in the Aquavit Lounge- only 16 people.  Shrimp, risotto, salad, black forest cake.  Great selection of food. Went to top deck to watch the ship go through a lock, then to lounge to listen to Georgi on piano. Chocolate martinis were good.  Ship left at 8:00- sailing towards Kehl/Strasbourg France.
